PC/DACS is a system utility that adds password protected access control to a computer. It support session timeout, usage time restrictions, boot protection, system drive encryption, and GUI tools for all administrative tasks.

The product was available for DOS and OS/2. The two are compatible, and can be used to dual-boot while keeping both OSes secure.

This product, although not being developed/updated/sold since long time, it is luckily available as "Abandonware" software on many dedicated sites on world wide web.

This software is distributed as compressed package. You have to download and manually install it; if prerequisites are required, you will have to manually install them too.

Manual installation

Self-installingpackage. Run INSTALL.EXE. See below for download link(s).

PC/DACS for OS/2 (Data Access Control System) v. 2.1 (8/1/1995, Mergent International, Inc) Readme/What's new
NEW FEATURES AND FIXES ====================== PC/DACS for OS/2 version 2.1 is a release consisting of compatibility with IBM OS/2 version 2.0 Service Pak, IBM OS/2 version 2.1 Service Pak, IBM OS/2 version 2.1 for Windows, and IBM OS/2 Warp. The major enhancements made to this version of PC/DACS for OS/2 are: (1) Compatibility with IBM OS/2 Warp version 3. (2) Compatibility with IBM OS/2 version 2.1 for Windows. (3) Support for IBM Network SignON Coordinator/2. (4) The removal process (OS2REM) now removes all PC/DACS for OS/2 files. (5) It is now possible to install PC/DACS for OS/2 version 2.1 with a PC/DACS database. Installation Issues (1) If one copies PC/DACS database files to the root of the PC/DACS for OS/2 Installation disk or to the network directory that contains the PC/DACS for OS/2 files to be used for installation to the computers, then one is able to install PC/DACS for OS/2 with a database. (2) A sample DACSOS2.INI file is included on the disk set named SAMPLE.INI. Use this file to create a DACSOS2.INI file to customize Logon, Time Out, and to work with Network SignON Coordinator/2. (3) Install will no longer remove pre-existing DACSOS2.INI and BMP files. Logon Issues (1) 1024x768 bitmaps can now be displayed as a background. Reference DACSOS2.INI in the PC/DACS for OS/2 manuals for details. Global Security Parameters Issues (1) A problem was fixed where if you had over seven password exclusion words entered then the eighth word would consist of random characters. (2) A change was made to work around an incompatibility with OS/2 and IBM Thinkpad 750 video drivers. The computer would lock up when the user attempted to open up Global Security Parameters by double-clicking on the GSP icon. (3) A problem was fixed where any password was allowed if the minimum password length was set to 1 and the first character restriction in a password was set to "%" (special character). Boot Protection Issues (1) If the hard disk geometry changes between the time of Boot Protection and the time of removal, an error message displays and the computer locks up to prevent damage to the hard disk. (2) An incompatibility with IBM OS/2 version 2.11 (ServicePak) with HPFS partitions and PC/DACS Boot Protection has been fixed. After enabling Boot Protection the computer would not boot up and you had to perform an external removal of Boot Protection. Time Out Issues (1) Now compatible with OS/2 version 2.1 for Windows. (2) The clipboard between OS/2 and Windows programs had not been operating in previous versions of PC/DACS for OS/2. Time Out is set up a different way. SYSTEM.INI in all Windows directories on the hard disk (including directories \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 and Microsoft Windows directories) will now contain: [boot] dacsos2w=winsheld.exe SAVDMApps= useos2shield=1 os2shield=dacsos2w.exe Note that the original "os2shield" commands are relocated to the "dacsos2w" command by PC/DACS. The moved commands are restored with the PC/DACS removal process (OS2REM). Note that if "os2shield=" does not exist in a SYSTEM.INI then "dacsos2w" will not be added to the file. Warning! You must install PC/DACS on all bootable partitions. Time Out for WIN-OS/2 will not work on bootable partitions that do not have PC/DACS for OS/2 installed but do have the Windows changes for Time Out. (3) 1024x768 bitmaps can now be displayed as a background. Reference DACSOS2.INI in the PC/DACS for OS/2 manuals for details. (4) Changes are made to SYSTEM.INI (for both WIN-OS/2 and Windows) for PC/DACS Time Out. The changes are noted in item #2 above. Please note that if WIN-OS/2 or Windows is re-installed (or if they are installed after PC/DACS is installed) Time Out will not work in Windows. Therefore, one will need to manually make the noted changes to the SYSTEM.INI files or run the PC/DACS program called UPDATEW.EXE. (5) The "Release User-Shutdown" function has been changed. Prior to this release, "Release User-Shutdown" performed simulated Ctrl-Alt-Del key presses to reboot the computer. Now, this function calls an OS/2 routine to close files and write data to the hard disk(s) before rebooting. PC/DACS for OS/2 Removal (1) OS2REM now removes all of PC/DACS for OS/2. In previous releases, the removal process was unable to remove OS2REM.EXE and the PCSPGMS\OS2 directory. (2) In previous releases, the removal process would automatically reboot the computer. Now, you must manually shutdown and reboot the computer. New Files on the Disk Set (1) SAMPLE.INI. An example of DACSOS2.INI. The file contains a sample setup for the IBM Network SignON Coordinator/2. (2) UPDATEW.EXE. Updates SYSTEM.INI files with the changes needed for Time Out to work. (3) DACSNSC.EXE. Provides compatibility with the IBM Network SignON Coordinator/2. (4) OS2REMOV.EXE. Replaces OS2REM.EXE. However, installation will create OS2REM.CMD in the PCSPGMS\OS2 directory so that documentation and the removal process do not change. The reason for the new executable is the process has been enhanced so that OS2REM no longer leaves behind the removal executable and the PCSPGMS\OS2 directory. (5) UPDATEBT.EXE. Updates the PC/DACS for DOS PCSBTPRT.EXE file with the one shipped with PC/DACS for OS/2 version 2.1 if the version of PC/DACS for DOS is before 3.00.
