Dupfin (Duplicate Finder) v. 1.3 (1/9/2026, Anton Monroe) Readme/What's new
PROGRAM : dupfind.cmd AUTHOR : N. Morrow LANGUAGE : REXX OS : eCS v1.2.x SYNOPSIS : duplicate filename find utility USAGE : dupfind -help or -? : displays help CREATED : 2005 Apr 22 UPDATED : 2005 Sep 11 - v1.0.7 UPDATED : 2006 Jun 29 - v1.1 by John Small UPDATED : 2016 Jan 28 - v1.2 by Anton Monroe UPDATED : 2026 Aug 26 - v1.3 by Anton Monroe STATUS : Public Domain NOTES : Dupfind checks for files with duplicate filenames in the selected directory(s). Dupfind is useful for system troubleshooting and for locating redundant files. The results go to STDOUT. Error messages go to STDERR. --akm: now default output is to STDOUT, unless -out= switch is used -- As of Warp 4 Fixpak 13, REXXUTIL included additional functions. -- One of these was SysStemSort. This program now tries to use -- this function if it is available. The speed improvement over -- v1.0x of this program is dramatic. Without SysStemSort, Dupfind is a processor intensive utility. On older systems with large volumes the time to process may be lengthy. --akm: August 2026. always use SysStemSort. By now surely everybody has a newer RexxUtil.dll. Installation: Place dupfind.cmd in the directory of your choice. Typing "dupfind -help" at a command line will display help. Future enhancements: - nls support. - ability to check an entire system instead of only one volume. - group like filenames by date Anton Monroe Made a lot of changes, including * made ending Beep optional, because it annoys me. Default = OFF * made header and stats optional, "-bare" option turns them off * added the -format option so you can format the output how you want it * I got rid of the 'logfile' feature, on the grounds that what Dupfind.cmd produces is not a log and the %LOGFILE directory is not a logical place for it. * added -out=<filename> option to tell the script where to send output. Default is stdout. * added a -content option to verify that the contents of two files are the same. The -content function requires cmp.exe in the %PATH. It's part of the GNU diffutils rpm package, so you probably have it or can install it easily. * added -quote option to quote filenames in case they have spaces. * added the -include=<filespec> option, so you can list more than one filespec * added the -exclude=<filespec> option. Any filename or directory matching an excluded filespec will be ignored. * added a progress counter on the screen. * replaced command line parsing with GetOpts(). That means all options must start with "-", not "/", but you can use "/" in a path. * added a -norecurse option, to compare two or more directories without recursion * added an -ea option to also list extended attributes * added a -pathsort option to change how the results are shown * added a -samedir option for comparing two directory trees akm: the "fold00" comments are a product of the folding text editor I use. the labels that start with 0 are part of my own scheme for maintaining standard subroutines. the Mark routine is used only for debugging.
