Thank you for purchasing Master of the Empire (MOTE) for OS/2.

Requirements to Run Master of the Empire.

You must have at least OS/2 Warp 3.0, preferably OS/2 Warp 4.0
installed on your machine. MOTE will run with the minimum
requirements of the installed base OS/2 system, but the game runs
more smoothly on a 16mb Pentium class machine. If you do suffer
performance problems, there are options in MOTE that can ease this
issue somewhat. See the game options section of the Master of the
Empire Players and World Builders Manual.

Installing Master of the Empire

Insert the Master of the Empire CD into your CDROM, open up an OS/2
window, then goto to the drive that is your CDROM (usually D: or
F:) and type INSTALL.

You will then presented with the MOTE install window.

Altering Master of the Empire Text Files and Bitmaps.

Important!
Do not alter these files if you will require technical assistance. If
these files are modified, are altered you will not be elgible for
technical support from Trilliun Software Products.

There are several text files included in your MOTE directory, that
can be edited to reflect your personal biases. These files are the
player.txt, banner.txt, subs.txt and ships.txt.  Also, a series of
bitmaps are distributed on the MOTE CD that are used as banners for
the ruling empires in the game.

PLAYER.TXT - This file represents the players names as they are used
by MOTE. The file is in the following format;

   <player 1 empires name >
   <player 1 ruling name  >
   <player 2 ruling name  >
   <player 3 ruling name  >
   <player 4 ruling name  >
   .
   .
   .

Do not alter the remaining lines or insert any unneeded lines!

BANNER.TXT - These are listing of the empirical banners as they are
distributed on the MOTE CD. To add a banner, just replace one of
the listed filenames. The very first three filenames COMP1 to COMP3
represent the banners that the computer opponents will use, if you
want your opponents to use some other type of bitmap, then just
replace the distributed text with your filename. Note this is an
awesome stress reliever, replace the bitmaps with a symbol
representing the bitmap of real life foe, and pummel him or her in a
game of MOTE!

The developers used this feature alot, replacing the default bitmaps
with bitmaps of our enemies!

SUBS.TXT - You can change the names of any of the subs to whatever
you want, just do not alter or delete the very first line in the text
file.

SHIPS.TXT - You can change the names of any of the ships to whatever
you want, just do not alter or delete the very first line in the text
file.

Altering Your Empires Banner

To alter any of the default banners, open up an OS/2 window, goto
the Master of the Empire directory (usually \MOTE) and type
ICONEDIT, this will invoke the icon editor that is distributed with
the base OS/2 system. Then hit CTRL-O to open the file dialog box,
you should see a list of bitmaps that are in the MOTE directory.

If you just want to edit a distributed bitmap, just click on the one
you want. If you want to create a banner from scratch, we suggest
you use the banner template. Find the file TEMPLATE and open it.
This is the default size for user created banners, so we suggest
you use it.

Importing Bitmaps From Other Sources

If your importing bitmaps from other sources, like shareware bitmaps,
paint programs or whatever there are several simple guidelines to be
followed to insure MOTE properly recognizes your bitmap.
 1.) The pallete used by the bitmap should contain only 256 colors.
 2.) A banner should be no bigger then approximately, 90 pixels by
     100 pixels.
 3.) An OS/2 saved bitmap. Windows (created under either Windows
     3.1 or Windows 95) created bitmaps can be read in unreliably so
     they should not be used.

Master of the Empire Campaigns and Scenarios

Master of the Empire has a unique feature that allows you to create
a series of linked scenarios, using different maps and objectives.
You could create a customized set of battles, then arrange them in
any sort of order, ie. create a series of battles showing the battle
of Kursk. You can then give copies of the campaigns and scenarios
to friends, or upload them to the Internet.

The scenarios or worlds, are created in the Master of the Empire
World Builder. They are then imported into the main program which
allows you to play through that series of scenarios.
